I founded Encore Career Lab because I know what it’s like to have a successful business career, and I know what it’s like to leave your career behind.
I spent two decades as the managing partner and majority owner of a wealth management firm. During that time, we grew our company from $50 million to more than $1.5 billion in assets under management. Over the course of my career, I worked with hundreds of professionals, executives and business owners to manage their complex wealth management needs.
In my early 50s, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sell my company. I was excited. I thought I was ready to do something “completely different.”
And – don’t get me wrong – there was a lot I enjoyed in the early phase of my new-found freedom.
No more urgent problems from demanding clients. No more stress about personnel issues and compliance audits.
Total freedom to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, wherever I wanted.
Bliss, right?
But after a while, I learned what a writer feels like when he’s staring at a blinking cursor on a blank page. Or what a sculptor feels like when she’s staring at a big block of clay.
When you can do anything you want – how do you decide what that “anything” is?
I had devoted most of my adult life to creating financial plans for my clients in their retirement years, and I had done the same for myself. But, in hindsight, I didn’t devote the time I should have to plan for the existential issues that quickly arise once you’ve left your career behind.
Issues Like:
The truth is, I didn’t plan for these types of challenges because I didn’t understand how significant they are until I’d gone through the experience first-hand.
After several years going through what I call the “wondering and wandering” phase of post-career life, I realized I’d learned a lot more about myself after my first career was over than I ever did during it. I learned through trial-and-error. Through doing things the hard way and realizing there had been a better way.
I also dove into the research to find out what makes for a happy, meaningful life when you move into your so-called “Golden Years.”
What I found surprised me – even shocked me – because it turns out that the worst thing we can do is embrace the ideal of the “do-nothing retirement” model that has been the standard in America for nearly a century.
Forget all those financial services ads that show retirees frolicking through amber waves of grain with a perma-grin on their faces. Here’s the harsh reality of what a do-nothing retirement looks like:
The bottom line? Creating a clear and compelling vision for your post-career life isn’t just about fending off boredom and staying “occupied.” It may be the most important decision you’ll ever make – one that can literally affect both the quality and length of your life!
That’s why I founded Encore Career Lab: To show you how to create your perfect encore career that keeps you feeling engaged, purposeful and joyful while still providing you all the freedom and flexibility you’ve been craving when you leave your first career behind.
A career you are in total control of.
A career you can scale and leverage to be as big (or small) as you want.
A career in which you only work with people you want to work with, and only in the way you want to work with them.
A career that brings in as much income as you want – maybe more than you ever earned in your peak income years.
It’s the kind of life you’ve been dreaming about, and we can show you how to create it.
